Melissa’s early interest in painting paved the way to other art forms which she began blogging about in 2009 .  Thanks to her dedication and passion for everything creative her readership has grown steadily over the years. Today Melissa has, on Instagram alone, over 20K followers as well as over 4,300 followers on Twitter with around 14K tweets! We have been following Melissa’s beautiful creative projects and found her pointed-pen calligraphy really inspiring.

When did your passion for artistic lettering begin?

I’ve always loved letters. And by always, I remember begging my mom to tell me how to spell my name. The first picture is my attempt at block lettering at 5 years old. At 13 we did a calligraphy section in art class, then at 15 my dad helped me start a stationery business. It didn’t go anywhere.

How did this love of letters evolve?

I designed and hand lettered several posters and newsletters in my high school days, but it wasn’t until college that I actually learned how to use a computer. From there I ditched hand-lettering all together for digital work.

What inspired you to take up hand lettering  again?

Just after college I inherited a book passed down from my great-great grandfather, the Atkinson Sign Painting book. Turning the pages re-ignited my passion for hand-drawn letters. That’s when I picked up the pointed pen. It was 2009. I’ve been practicing ever since!

How have you applied your passion to your everyday life?

In 2012, I launched calligraphy.org and I’ve been teaching there since. It’s been a great avenue to help spread the appreciation for letters and it’s pushed me to learn more about this lovely medium.
